Let us know if the Corsair works

Good luck
yes the next step is PSU before I would rule it a mobo issue. See if anyone has a spare PSU laying around even if it is low wattage.

Another thing, leave the mobo unplugged from everything for 24 hours. The cmos will automatically reset. it could be a bad cmos chip. After that buy a new mobo and GL!

why are you trying to jump it? better to have a spare power button from an old case or something lying around to use, or just use the plug from the case it was in without putting it back in the case, try starting it up with a real power button.

reminds me of my fried power button it would startup for 2 seconds and shut off, so based on that jumping it is probly shorting it and thats why it shuts off immediatly. not 100% on this just a suggestion from personal experiances

I suppose I will try a real power button. I have jumped many other mobo's before and they seem to work. I jumped my machine while it was in pieces on my desk before I put it in a case.

Raptor_Jesus, what method did you use to jump it? The only one that comes to mind is the shorting the two PW pins with a screw driver...

Good luck

Raptor_Jesus, did you have a chance to test a different power supply yet?

Good luck

Hello. I just did. I used the Corsair in my sig to test it. I plugged it into their mobo, and turned it on. The fans spun up, but no video feed. On the cheapy PSU that came with their computer, the fans spun up then shut down again, (Bad PSU I believe). I think that this is a combination PSU and mobo failure (PSU failed, and killed the mobo). Even if its not a PSU failure, I'm still getting one for him, because I don't need it to fry a perfectly good $80 motherboard in the furture. I'm going with the Corsair 400w, because they only use on-board video, and its a good $50 insurance policy.

Edit: Parts ordered yesterday. Should be in shortly. Shipped. On it's way.

Default Great success!

Well this is a bump, and also an update.

I finally got around to hooking up the PSU and Mobo. I had a scary moment, though. As I was removing the Heatsink/Fan, I pulled to hard, and the thermal compound had stuck, which tore the processor out of the socket, bending one of the pins in the process. I started panicking, but calmed down, got my leatherman, pulled out the jewelers screw driver out, and ever so carefully straightened it out. So I hooked up the the new mobo and PSU, and inserted the DIMMS and processor, cleaned out the nasty thermal paste, and replaced it with some AS5. Oh, and BTW, the AMD Heatsink mounting system is SO much better than the dumb LGA775 pushpins. Thumbs-up AMD! After hooking up everything, and jumping the power pins (hadn't installed it in the case yet), I heard the whir of the fans, and I quickly hopped over to my monitor. The DMI update was a success, and it started loading vista. It failed to boot the first time, so I rebooted into safe-mode, and used dev-manager to uninstall basically every piece of hardware. I rebooted, and it went crazy updating drivers, 95% of which it had included (had to install the eth and video drivers manually). Rebooted again, and great success!

So I put it in the case, and pushed the power button. Oh noes! Nothing happened! Flipped the switch on the back of the PSU a few times, and tried again, nothing. So I tried manually jumping the pins. Nothing, again. I started to get worried. I pulled out the 24 pin, and jumped the green to black with a paper clip, and the fan started spinning. I started to sweat now, thinking that I fried to mobo somehow while installing. I put the 24 pin back in, and tried jumping the pins again. Nothing. But, while jumping the pins, my hand brushed against the processor fan, and started it spinning manually. Everything started running normally. I took a closer look, and noticed a TON of dust build-up, which I air-canned out shortly afterwards.

Everything is working now, and I didn't have to re-install vista for them. I never thought I'd say this, but vista, nice job. It took a mobo change in a stride, and all is well now.

BTW- They are also professors at a university near-by, so I told them to drop my name to anybody having computer issues. Hopefully I can get some extra money fixing up people's machines

Thanks for all the help guys!

Great! Yeah I have swaped motherboards on windows 7/ vista dozens of times without reinstalling, just put the new drivers on.

And about you making money on your hobby, that is the best thing. My computer/hobby pays for it self. I have always made it a goal to spend only the money I make from, selling computers, fixing computers, unlocking phones, fixing ps3's and xbox's, etc for my computer/electronic obsession!

Good luck, you will not sleep 8 hours ever again! Phone calls every day for people asking you to fix their computer, well at least it is that way for me

Haha thanks. This is a hobby I really want to get involved with. I do the general family fixes, but expanding it to others would be great. How did you get the word out to others that you were good with this stuff?
