One beep on startup is to signify a good POST. Maybe its just a coincidence for you but its a fact that one beep is a successful POST. More then one beep, then you got some problems.

Ah, I guess I have just always had gpu issues when it doesn't beep. (perhaps because my only system I've ever really overclocked I've purposely removed/disabled the speaker)
