Default AMD Phenom II X2 550 on Gigabyte MA785GM-US2H

Hi all,

This is my first custom computer, and as a result I have a lot of questions. I've always been pretty good with computers, and have done extensive work with general hardware, so up to this point, I've been able to learn from reading other posts, books, etc. I'm also a software developer; however, I've hit a bit of a wall.

System Specs:
MB - GA-MA785GM-US2H by Gigabyte
Processor - AMD Phenom II X2 550 (3.1 GHz)
RAM - 2 x Corsair PC8500 1 GB @ 1066 MHz

The motherboard I bought has a Hyper Transport Bus of 5200/2000 MT/s. The processor is listed as having Hyper Transports at up to 4000MHz. Two things...

1) In EasyTune 6, I believe they have HT listed as FSB; however, the FSB stays around 2022-2023 MHz at all times. The CPU speed is right where it should be at around 3140 MHz.

2) I bought 1066 MHz DDR2 RAM and had to increase the multiplier in BIOS to 5.33 to get the full speed. The MB can have RAM overclocked to over 1200+ MHz according to the specs. Do I have to do something similar to get the most out of my processor.

It's important to know that I'm not really too interested in "overclocking" like most people here probably are. I'm not a gamer, but I want to get what I can out of my processor and motherboard without affecting longevity and stability too much.

How can I get up to the optimal HT speed?

Thanks everyone,

Chris

The chip has unlocked multiplier for NB, HT, and CPU. You can raise the multi on any of them to get a bump. The reference clock is like fsb. It should be at 200 or so. The NB speed, cpu speed, and HT link is all correlated to the reference clock and so is the memory.

You can raise the multi on any of them to get higher speeds or you can raise the reference clock and everything would go up in speed.

Thanks for the response, Mikecdm. Would I need to compensate with additional cooling?

^^^ Yeah, that's Think3r said.

@Webjawns- what kind of cooling case you have? If it is well ventilated, chances are you will clock as high as what HondaGuy said.

Webjawns, that HT Link speed (Hypertransport) speed is fine. It's listed as 4000Mhz because it's double pumped. Not sure why EasyTune 6 is listing it as the "FSB" though...

To get the most out of your processor you would have to overclock it. However you mentioned above that you are not interested in overclocking? So far everything looks great. You have both components running at their stock speeds so I don't see any issues at the moment.

It's a shame you won't be oc'ing I have the same cpu and mobo you have. You can really crank it up. Well, you can see by my title just how far you can get it. And that took no effort. Just a decent cooler.

Thanks everyone for your help!

@dkev How much of a performance boost will I see? I see you've done quite well for yourself, but what does that amount to in terms of application load time, boot time, etc., etc.

Dkev, great job on the 4Ghz OC. Very awesome

Can you list off all your settings ect? Do you know the stepping listed on your IHS? What I'm most interested in are the last few digits, it might look like this "90xxx" (where x is usually numbers).

Good luck
