Default Has anyone run an AM3 chip in an AM2+/AM3 board?

Looking at all the Phenom II AM3 955, 965 overclocks, it seems pretty much everyone is running them on AM3 motherboards with DDR3.

I'm considering getting one of those new 965 C3 steppings when they come out, but I have an AM2+/AM3 motherboard: Gigabyte MA790GP-UD4H.

The latest bios does support the 965, and I do have 1066 DDR2 RAM... so I'm wondering if there's anything I need to worry about? If anyone runs this setup, AM3 chip in a non-AM3 board, please chime in! Thx

you should be fine. As long as the boards latest bios supports it then you should be good to go.

First your mobo can support 965(update your bios).
AM2+/AM3 has the same chipset as the AM3

No worries, my board is AM2+/AM3. And as soon as I popped my 955 it saw it.

Hitting 3.8 was easy, getting a stable 4.0 ghz, that will be a challenge!

Sweeeeet. Now I'm wondering what's the deal with DDR3 vs DDR2? The DDR3 is larger bandwidth so wouldn't it mean higher performance? OR is it that DDR2 is plenty enough already and more doesn't make a difference?

You will get 2-5% better performance on ddr3 over ddr2.

DDR3 has slightly higher bandwidth
DDR2 is cheaper and you can get more for the price

up to you basically

^^ Unless you have my ram.....ddr2 @ 1300mhz cas 5

DDR3 is actually cheaper than DDR2 now for the most part. Also, let's see some validation on that memory speed. I highly doubt anyone can run 4 banks of 1300mhz cas5 on a Phenom II platform with stability.

I havent tried them yet on my PhII - been pre-occupied with exams (and at least until monday i will also be...)
although i might as well try now.....if i get time later on.....
and i never said stabily (although from memory i think it was memtest stable @ 1300 but not 1333)
