Default Scrambled FAT anyone ???

Hey All ,

Been having some recurring issues with my PC for the last few months now and I’m not quite sure about the diagnosis. Now, the problem:

Mid way through using the PC just doing a variety of simple task (non-gaming related) the PC will over a matter of seconds slowly start to lose functionality and come to a grinding frozen screen halt ! Upon restarting the PC Windows will not load. The only remedy is to use WinXP Repair Console to run a Scan Disk/Check Disk searching for and repairing errors found. On each occasion the HDD File System (NTFS ….. was just making a pun about the old FAT system in the header ) had scrambled and needed repair. Scandisk achieves this successfully and abra’cadabra … I have a working WinXP again !

The problem is it’s now happened about 3 times in 2 months (not including this mornings scramble which I have yet to repair…… am on the spare PC as I type).

I’ve run Seagates SeaTools diagnosis after the first NTFS crash which declared the HDD is in good working order (except for the scrambled NTFS offcourse).

I thought maybe the OS needed a clean so just yesterday I formatted my WinXP and this time installed newly purchased Windows 7 . Unfortunately this morning I’ve had a similar lockup/scramble

Could these problems be a tell-tale sign of a slowly dying HDD? (3 years old)

Or a slowly dying motherboard/ motherboard chipset ? (1.5 years old)

Or something different entirely

Cheers all

Update: Just repaired the latest crash on Win 7 this morning. Again it was a HDD File System f*ck up

I'd say either a dying HDD or bad SATA ports on you mobo (I'm assuming you have SATA). I'd try switching the SATA chord that connects the HDD and mobo. I'd also connect that chord to a different port on the mobo. If that doesn't woek, there's probably something wrong with the HDD. Good luck.

there is no "h" in cord but other than that it's pretty sound advice.

I would say the hard drive needs a full format. When you were installing win7 you left the file system intact. There is a quick format, full format and leave file system intact so it inherited the problems from that xp install

What'd you expect...

J-vibe had a good point about the format.

If all fails, HDD's have gone down a lot scince three years ago when you got your HDD.

This is false.

Quote:
When you choose to run a regular format on a volume, files are removed from the volume that you are formatting and the hard disk is scanned for bad sectors. The scan for bad sectors is responsible for the majority of the time that it takes to format a volume.

If you choose the Quick format option, format removes files from the partition, but does not scan the disk for bad sectors. Only use this option if your hard disk has been previously formatted and you are sure that your hard disk is not damaged.

If you installed Windows XP on a partition that was formatted by using the Quick format option, you can also check your disk by using the chkdsk /r command after the installation of Windows XP is completed.

Okay so the wave of opinion is saying HDD..... and Yes, it's a SATA-2.5 HDD (sorry, should have mentioned)

I'll try a different SATA port + a new SATA cable (may as well) and see how it goes first up.

(I'd like to keep everyone updated on finding a resolution to this peculiar problem, but odds are the HDD ain't gonna scramble again for a few weeks most likely so it just may be a while till a future progress update is all).

Thanks everyone for their post !
