yeah just a thought tho', if you are going to be backing up files there that are important..... don't trust a crappy power supply. Also, if you are going to leave it on 24/7, i wouldn't trust a crappy power supply.... it might catch on fire and burn down the house (i know that is far fetched). just my 2cents...
As for the file server, i use ubuntu server command line only on mine. It has been great.... just have the power cord and network cable plugged in. I connect with ssh to do the updates and add users etc....

might as well use it...I still have several socket A rigs...I have one at the shop now that I uses for a media machine (music) that has a 2600 mobile DTR chip on a Biostar mATX board....still runs strong...

It's still a useable machine as others have said.
Fileserver, folding, surfing, used with Ventrilo as a voicechat server machine for online gaming or whatever, it can still be useful. If all else fails, you could have fun with it as I did with mine just the other day: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=797863 Yours is probrably a T-bred chip and should be a T-Bred "B" core chip if it is with it's model # or perhaps it's a Palomino core.

The old Athlon XP chip are some of the best chips for run XP. My 3200+ with dual channel memory and sata connect is the faster to boot up in XP vs. my sig.
