Exclamation Should i revive my AMD Socket A System?

Hi guys!

I happened to chance upon my old AMD Socket A System which were in pieces lying around at the back of my house. I plugged in all the basic stuff without a case, PSU, HDD and GFX and to my amazement, the whole naked rig booted up!

Here's the specs:-

CPU
AMD Athlon XP 2000+

Mainboard
MSI Kt4AV Socket A

RAM
Kingston DDR-400 CL2.5 512MB

GFX
Sapphire ATI Radeon 9200SE 128MB

HDD
Maxtor IDE 40GB

PSU
Some generic 20pin made in China PSU

Oh yeah. Another point to note was that my Heatsink fan for my processor is missing. There was just a heatsink on it and after 10 mins, the screen turned green. I immediately turned my PC off after that but it could turn on again. Can i just screw a generic fan onto the Heatsink and plug it into the mobo's CPU fan switch?

I know i am missing a case, but what others besides the PSU and thermalpaste should i get new? Thanks guys!

Do you have any reason to? Socket A still works for a surfbox

I don't think you need to spend money on a PSU for such an old system; the generic one should be fine.

As for your CPU fan problem: Zipties
As for your case problem: Cardboard

Any plans on what you could use it for?

I have no idea seriously. Just to put it somewhere in my house so others can surf the net or play simple games like warcraft 3?

Or do you guys think that i am wasting time with this rig...?

EDIT: Oh yeah, i have some spoilt video cards. Should i throw them into the bin or just give it to some PC shop? I also have a Working Pentium 3 system. What should i do?

Hey bro!

You're right man! I used zipties and tied a blue LED fan to the heatsink and it really looks professional.

I would try using one of them as a file server/workhorse and manage it with remote desktop. I've done that to a spare athlon 3600+ dell and it works wonders.

I back up all my important files on it, and if I need to convert a video or decompress a .rar for any reason, I do it on that computer to save resources on mine. Not to mention when I'm downloading or uploading any big files, doing it on my file server saves my ping in games.

that would make a good file server

you might be able to get a cheap 20 pin power supply off newegg and as for heat-sinks you may have to look at eBay

you can probably get a few IDE hard drive for a file server if that's the path you chose to follow.

I don't know much about Linux but I know for a fact UBUNTU is more GUI-friendly.
