Default Best price/performance X2, X3, X4

Hey Guys!

I am arranging to build another system, but I was wondering what you all thought was the best price to performance ratio for gaming. I want to pair it with an 8x 8x Xfire mobo and I would probably upgrade the processor to AM3+ eventually so keep that in mind. I plan on overclocking so which scales best in that department?

Here is the mobo and processors I am looking at.

My vote's in for the x3. Great price for the processor and it could potentially be a x4 with one core disabled. In all honesty though, for about $70, you can not take the gamble and have an x4. AMD is just a bang for your buck CPU.

im not sure how the 965 clocks, but from what i've seen 720BE overclocks easy.. if you're not concerned about the price i'd say go for the 965, but as i said X3 is a good overclocker..

EDIT: im happy i bought mine! but if i had more money i would've bought the 965 :P

X3 is the best bang for your buck. Use that 80 dollars to put towards your GPU.

I don't see why you aren't looking at the 925 or 940?

If you can i recommend you pick up a quad core...you really can't go wrong spending 20-40$ more and getting a stable extra core

Games are soon going to start supporting more and more cores so you can't lose by adding life to your CPU and quite a bit of performance in quad core supporting apps

If you can you should wait a week or two(not sure how long it will be) until the new C3 stepping is released...models are being discontinued and the new C3 revisions may OC better and allow higher NB/memory speeds etc etc

Either way these discontinued models will drop in price so you really can't lose waiting a few days

Like i said i don't know how long it will be so if it's a ridiculously long wait i would just go ahead and build now

Thanks for the advice, I will wait to see when the prices drop for that.

I was looking at the overclocks for X3s and it seems I can get it up to around 3.7 Ghz quite easily on air. I hope I can get the 4th core to activate.

The X2 would be a better value if it can unlock

However, that is an if

Yeah you are best off spending that 20-40$....it will be worth it in the long run

I sold my 550 after it didn't unlock and picked up this quad...didn't lose more than some pocket change and i am definitely happy knowing i won't get sick with buyers remorse come new games/apps etc....

I am about ready to drop this CPU down into a secondary rig and go C3...

X3 definitely. For an X4 965 you might as well go i5. i5 has better overclocking potential and beats the X4 in nearly every benchmark I've laid eyes upon.
