Default $500 workstation build

So, my dad's Dell Dimension 4400 won't POST, and in case it never comes back, he's open to a budget of $500 for work, AND STRICTLY WORK!!! No need to skimp for a decent video card.

Windows 7 or some other viable great OS (XP will be fine too) must also be included. Upgrade paths would be welcome, which is why I didn't choose the very much dead socket LGA 775. Yay, future hexacore AM3 CPU!

So far, this is what I have come up with:

System: Slow Ride (dell dimension 8400 w/minor upgrades)
CPU
Pentium 4 540J
Motherboard
Dell 0U7077 i925x
Memory
3GB (2 x 512MB, 2 x 1GB ) DDR2 @ 266 MHz
Graphics Card
Sparkle GeForce 9400GT
Hard Drive
Seagate ST3160023AS
Sound Card
Creative Audigy LS series (SB Live! 24Bit)
Power Supply
350w Dell
Case
Some Dimension case
OS
Windows 7 RC x86
Monitor
Dell E193FP/E156FP

Nice budget build. I think I'd change out the mobo for an mATX and upgrade the CPU to a 720BE, but that's just me. I'm sure whatever you build for him, it'll be a hell of a lot better than what he's using now!

That's a nice build for 500. I cant think of much that would be better either without busting that budget..... and I've been trying for 10 minutes now.

The Sony Optiarc is a good drive, I'm using it in my build and I recommend it. Same with the Athlon II 245, I used a Athlon II 240 for my gf's build and clocked it to 3.2GHz at stock voltage and its superb. Only things I think you should look over are the HDD and Windows 7.

For the HDD I recommend this WD Caviar Blue 500GB with a cheap SATA cable Combo Deal. I also used this in my gf's build and its fast/reliable/and has plenty of storage.

As for Windows 7, I just prefer you save the extra $100 stay with Vista if thats what your dad used, but thats just what I think.

Ah, two more cores. I was eying that X4 620 for a while but since it was 1/5 of budget, I wasn't sure how I'd stuff it in.

Has anyone worked with the case that's been linked?
