new build. i never payed attention to temps before but i would like to oc this a bit. ASUS M4A79XTD EVO, x3 720, oem heat sink, oem TIM. antec 900 case with all fans on high. these are the temps i saw.
__________________cpu 45 under load saw 47 for a second but stayed at 45 for 99% of the time. the cores are like 10 below the cpu idles at like 31 with cores at like 20 the motherboard temp (this is NB right?) idles at like 26 and did not go up much running prime that i recall. how are these? do they seem high? i might get a aftermarket heat sink. i want to go for 3.3 to 3.4 24hours stable oc. most people keeps their below like 55 loaded right? is that the cpu or the cores? any info would be great. i searched and i can never find should i go by the cores or the cpu when looking at everest

Not quite sure what you're saying. The cores and the CPU are the same thing. But overall, those are pretty good temps for a stock heatsink.

In everest there are 4 cpu temps. CPU, core 1, core 2, core 3. core 1 2 3 and like 10 degrees cooler than the cpu.

what the temp in the room? I read some where that temps mean nothing unless we know what the ambient temp is.
I mean your temps seem ok, how long did you run it for? It has to run for at least 3 hours for testing with prime95, OCCT , and or other tests to make sure it wont crash. So you gotta see what the temps are like over long periods of time. If you ran it with a load for 30 minutes its a good start, but gotta see how it goes in the long run. When you OC it gets hotter, and Volts have to go up, more heat. So we need a room temp and go from there. My 550 when going from dual to quad shot up from 33(dual) to 38(quad) at idle (my room is usually around 20~). Under load when in quad I hit 59 to 60 real quick. So the more info the better we can prepare you. Good luck

Lets start over, first if your gonna overclock that nice chip of yours ditch that junk cooler you got and get you a XDK or say a mugen II and apply some ocz freeze, ic7, mx-3, or as5. The key here is to keeping the chip as cool as possible. As stated here ambients do play a role as a starting point because that will dictate what idle's you'll get. Although idle's are not nearly as important as load temps are. Answering your question most people would say keep it under 55c as a general rule but 60c/65c is ok too. O' and when reading temps go by core temps.

the room i am in is around 20-22c. i am more than likely going to get a nice cooler in a few weeks and so i will just wait till then to change the TIM. those temps were after running prime for about 30 mins. it was stock settings so i just wanted to get a temp idea. i would hope its stable at 2.8 at 1.35.
__________________So you are saying go by cores 1, 2, 3 which are the lower temps? what is the cpu temp measuring? thanks

remember to use a program so you can see the temps as prime is running. CPU drop temp quick it seems to me.
And I would wait till you get the TIM and cooler before overclocking. But thats just my view.

yeah i had pc probe 2 open which i found out after is the cpu temp it is reading. and that is a lot higher than the core temps. i am going to try and get some more accurate numbers.

In the down load section you can find core temp. I use that to watch my temps as I use prime95 Torture test. I am using the blend test to check my RAM settings.
My room is at 19.1~, my idle was 25, and my highest was 45(this is part of the Core temp program). My CPU isn't OC'd yet. I just wanted to see what things are like at stock with my SHIN-ETSU X23 TIM and Mega shadow cooler with a panflo 120x38mm H1. Now I have a base to work from. Then when I go to OC my CPU I can see how much the idle has changed and what it will be under load. Now I have a bigger picture of what the Temp change will be like. I will have 15 degrees to play with for my over clock. And my fans are set at MED speeds(have another pan flo for exhaust). I have plenty of slack in my set up to run a cool OC. Dont know if my example helps any but just trying to give you a feel of what to look for. If my cooler didnt keep my temps lower at stock under load then I would think about getting a better HS and fans. I had a 550 and I thought my temps where good and I didnt test it as much as I should had. Had two pins melt into the socket plastic, ruining my CPU and old board. So now I try to be even more careful. An expensive mistake but one I learned from. Good luck and enjoy OCing. At times I feel like banging my head against a wall when things go rough, but when it all comes together I am very glad I picked this up as a hobby.
