Default Gaming ram Q

So i want to use my rig for gaming, doom3 hl2 bfV etc .

Right now i have 512 of corsair value poop , and it struggles in hl2. I know this because i had another stick of it for a week running in dual channel, and the game was alot smoother. But i returned that stick, and got a new case instead.

I am going to buy my friends BFG 6600gt from him, and i might sell my stick of ram to another friend. So im wondering...

Would getting a good cas2 2x256 set of ram from like pqi or ocz be ok? I have a budget and i cant spend like $250 for some really good OCZ, plus my mobo can only OC to 205/6 fsb stable ( i followed the OC guide in the gen section to figure this out) . So for now, would running 2 256 sticks in dual channel work well enough? or do games today really need 1gb of ram.

They don't NEED it yet, but it of course doesn't hurt. In a year or two, it will probably be necessary.

I think you would be better off buying a single 512MB stick, and then buying a second stick later when you have more money to get to 2x512 in dual channel.

for todays games, you realy should get the 1gig of ram. dual chan or not, it wont make a huge diff. i just ordered these bad boys(2 of them) and i hear they are one of the best. maybe pick up a stick of them? only 120$

The OCZ gold rev2 PC4000 is good ram for running up the FSB, but as far as timings are concerned, you'll get more performance out of an enhanced latency setup PC3200 (since you're only running 205 fsb)

Ya after reading a review on pqi and ocz i think im gonna stick to some CAS2 pqi. I guess ill just buy 1 stick of 512mb for now, then another in like a month or 2. Yiffy explained why its useless to buy pc4000 vs. really good pc3200. So i guess ill just try to find really good 3200.

need to purchase dual channel kit to make sure ram operates right.
if you purchase 512 now and wait until later the mem chips may not work to their best
because of different batches, and manufacturing differences.
