Default 4gig ram and XP 32 bit

Im running xp pro 32bit, and just got 4x 1gig sticks of twinx matched Corsair XMS...ill get the exact model if needed, but basically i know xp wont recognize 4gigs, so my question is - would it be better to just leave it at 3gigs, or add a 512 stick of XMS Pro series which i have?

Thanks for the help

windows xp 32bit doesnt support a 4gb setup. only xp 64bit does. you can add a 512mb stick in there but then youd have a dual channel kit and 2 sticks that arent in dual channel... I would leave the 2gb set in right now.. sell of the other 2gb and get a 2x512mb kit instead....

xp 32bit 2gb is more than enough but if u want more id recomend 2x 512mb sticks for dual channel rather than 1 more 1x 1gb stick.

Not to jack the thread but I have a similar setup. 2x1gb/2x512mb of DDR500 Ballistix which I got to max out to 3gigs on my setup which I dual boot XP pro/Vista Ultimate both 32bit. I haven't really seen any performance hit in realworld usage but some have said I should ditch the 2x512mb set and focus on 2x1gb. Running at 2t with all my dimms full, i still get above the DDR500 spec 540mhz at 3,3,3,8 1:1. Does it really hurt performance to do the setup I have?

If you do that, you lose dual channel.

I would just leave it how it is. Since you have a 512Mb memory card, you are still getting 3.5Gb of use of of your memory which isnt bad.

just run all four sticks and let windows recognize what ever it can

it will most likely be 3.5GB because your gfx card is 512mb

32bit windows can only address 4GB of total memory that includes, for one, video memory which lowers availability of system memory as a consequence.

Plan on doing some photo/video editing or some auto cad? If not anything more than 2 gigs of ram is useless and will only hamper your ability to overclock. Motherboards usually don't like having all four dimm slots full.
