Default I'm pretty confused

Does this apply to DDR3 am3 boards as well for 1333 memory, looks like it does..

I remember Gigabyte resolving this issue with a lot of SB7xx series chips. They did it so at least you could run DDR2 1066 while the CPU wasn't OC'ed.

It's a CPU limitation, so it really has nothing to do with the motherboard. BIOS revisions can help, but like my good man Pez stated, they have had limited good results.

If you have an AM2+ CPU/mobo... just buy DDR2 800. I keep telling people they are better off, but for some reason everyone tries buying 1066.

With AMD platforms, you're better off going DDR2 800 and finding a kit that has tight 4-4-4-12 timings!

I thought that too. I've been fighting this problem for a week and the mod at Mushkin gave me the correct settings for their memory.
I had to give it +.3v on the RAM and +.2v on the CPU NB VID. 2X2GB 5-5-5-15 @1066. 7.4 Performance Rating for the memory on Windows 7. 7.3 on everything else.(except HD)

A couple of posters have raised the question of whether or not AM3 + DDR3 have a similar limitation; I'd like to get that clarified, myself, as I had odd issues trying to run my RAM at 1633 MHz, and I have four sticks that nominally passed memtest86+ but failed Prime95 blend. Backing off to 1333 did the trick.

Well, take this into consideration:

AM3 only supports 1333 natively, and 1600 as an OC. So buying 1600 for AM3 anyway is a bit risky.

The new C3 steppings of the Phenom II chips also are fixed to support "heavy load" on the memory controller, so 4 sticks of 1333 should work just fine now in the new stepping chips.

AMD platforms have ALWAYS responded better to tighter timings anyway, so like my statement with AM2+ and always buying DDR2 800 with tight timings... with DDR3 I would only buy 1333 with the tightest timings I can find.

I can confirm that DDR3 1333 memory with 4 RAM modules in dual-channel causes the system to become unstable. Backing off to 1066 Mhz did the trick.
