which is better is there any performance gain or what? aside from the fact i could get an extra 4GB if i wanted to is there any other benifits?

2x2 would run cooler as it is not as close together and you always have room for another set of 2x2 later on!

No data shows the performance difference between 2x1GB and 4X1GB but 2X2GB is doing better in OC. In most cases, 4GB should be plenty unless you are working on ram hog applications.

Using 2x2GB would cause less stress on the mainboard, which can result in a better overclock.

I've been told that most motherboards are easier to overclock and get stable with half the slots filled than all of the slots, such as 2 vs 4.

If you are running Xp, 1 x 2G will be fine for overclocking. Some overclockers say you can get a better overclock with 1 stick and have possible better stability. You will never use all the memory when strictly overclocking.
