Default Possible to cut part of RAM cooling fins off?

I have 2x2 GB Corsair Dominators on my msi k9a2 platinum and I have the xigmatek 1283 cpu cooler, and it takes up a ram slot. I was wondering if I could but another 2x2 GB kit and cut off like 1/2 inch off the top on one of the RAM Sticks... would it seriously overheat?

It would probably be fine. Unless you really overvolt them it should not hurt it, just don't nick the RAM itself! Be careful while cutting it that you don't bend it where it is not touching the RAM, and be aware that you will not be able to RMA them if something goes wrong.

SO if I have THIS ram, I could cut off a little bit and on stock timings / voltage it wouldn't overheat?

BTW, the like rod like things on the top of them are JUST for cooling correct?

On stock those would be just fine. I have those exact ones, and they are not too hot. I have a temp probe stuck on mine, and currently it reads 37C. Of course it will be hotter on the inside, but it should not overheat.

Edit: What are you using this for? I game, and have never needed over 4GB. Also, a 32 bit system can't even take full advantage of 4GB of RAM. So unless you get a new OS adding more RAM would do nothing at all.

AFAIK using 3 sticks is not recommended. Use 1, 2, or 4.
