Default Weird RAM slot prob

Hey guys. My DFI SLi-dr expert mobo must be fubar. My rig is setup with the 2x1gb dimms of Mushkin ddr500 in the two closest slots to the CPU, and its completely stable at 260x10 for 2.6Ghz. Thing is, I don't think my cooler can make full contact with cpu because the RAM heat-spreaders are so tall. Its VERY close tho, enough to keep CPU acceptably cool, its just putting pressure on RAM. WELL, when I moved the RAM over to the first dual channel slots, the further slots away from cpu, so the cooler would clear RAM, the rig isn't stable at all. BSOD on every setting over 200 on fsb besides stock. Could this be related to max async, or any other setting in bios? I keep pretty much everything on default.

Any help appreciated

Try plugging in the floppy connector(s) to give the board more power. Also, do you have another PSU lying around to test? Try another PSU. I know these may be weird suggestions, but those old DFI boards are picky about power.

Also are you sure the timings are right, etc... Try to flash to newest available bios and clear CMOS and reinput all settings from scratch.

Have you tried adjusting the drive strength? What ram ic's do you have anyway. This makes a difference with what subtimings and drive strength you need to use.

The Mushkin is using Infineon CE-6, which is supposed to be, what I consider based on other ppl's opinions, to be more than compatible with my mobo. I have never messed with drive strength before, I mean I have, but every option other than auto seemed instable. Any suggestions?

Here are some base timings that may give you a rough idea of what you need. Don't be afraid of taking it up to 2.8v either. These ic's can handle up to 2.8v fine but higher and you may degrade the ram fairly quickly. Most of those timings are using the orange slots but it should give you a base to start with. You may want to keep the voltage closer to the high end of these sticks. From what I've read the sli-dr expert was built to handle higher voltage ram like bh-5, micron, and other high voltage ram with all four slots populated.

It's not unusual for different slots to clock differently.

My 3D stability is dead on with that link. My RAM is stable at 260Mhz int he two closest slots. I'm gonna look into some of the suggestions to get it stable int he other slots so the RAM can stay clear of the CPU cooler. I'm gonna clear CMOS after switching, and re-input all BIOS fields by hand.

BTW, could the issue be related to electrical latency? The slots are physically further away. I hear you want RAM as close to the CPU as possible for that exact reason, but I didn't think it would make it where I couldn't even runt he RAM stock, 250Mhz, jeez...

Dfi boards, especially NF4, are "special". The compromises, that most manufacturers built into the boards and bios for greater compatibility, are nearly non-existent in the Dfi's. They're harder to get working right, but when they do they fly.

Good luck with getting it stable.
