Default Hmm... RAM

RAM is Random Access Memory. Its what we use in our flash drives, computer memory, and from my knowledge, SSDs? No moving parts, no time delay in searching for sectors like hard drives, cd drives.

My point is, seeing as we have USB flash drives that are capable of over atleast 60gig. If one was somehow able to make it fit, could you have a stick of 60gig computer memory? Is there something stoping this from happening? Or is it just pointless. Super computers?

Just throwing it out there, got me thinking thats all.

well judging by thsi post ya... just ya...

they have flash drives up to 64 gb of memory. works in x2. 1gb, 2gb, 4,8,16, 32, and 64.

which is a different TYPE of memory then that in the average desktop computer. HOWEVER super computers can have more gb in ram then you do in your hdd's. as a home consumer though the average doesnt need anything above six. some users take it up to 24 with the new i7, yet few actually need it, and simply use it to satisfy their e-penis.

I can't think of any combination of programs that would need 60gigs. Even if there was, our current Processors would bottleneck the hell out of the RAM.

I wonder what 60gig RAM would look like anyway.

1st off, there are different kinds of RAM
RAM is not used in USB drives (windows vista with it's ready boost might give this misconception) (also someone correct me if i'm wrong, but up to my knowledge usb drives don't use same tech as RAM)
RAM is not used in SSDs, it is a different technology, SSD uses non-volatile memory usually

volatile requires power to keep info
non-volatile does not require power

memory is behind because it is not storage, it is used for actual processing (in a sense, more like a buffer)

RAM is a temporary memory buffer that the computer and kernel use to transfer data between the processor, memory controller, video GPU adapter, HDD etc.....
the problem with comparing RAM and Memory used for (storage) is storage is long term, so it relies on reliability and stability, while RAM is used for temporary storage for fast access, or speed.

another thing is you need to write the programs to address this much memory, and you have to consider FSB, and a few other factors that are pulling the said info to and from the RAM, if they can't write anywhere near as fast, or read as fast from it, why would you need so much?

Correct.

RAM is written byte-by-byte. (System Memory)

USB Flash Drives use Flash Memory (Non Volatile) but data is written block-by-block rather than byte-by-byte.

I think a 60 gigabyte stick is possible... the down side is it would be so big it would block your PCIe 16x slot thus defeating the purpose of that much ram.

A while ago (years) i saw a pci card that had slots for say 4(?) RAM sticks. It was used as a hard drive and was available for the everyday household. Say you put 4 x 2gig ram sticks, you have an 8 gig drive. It was primarily used for OS, the boot speeds were amazing. Sadly it never really took off.

All i've really got on the matter now. You bullys ruined my thoughts :'(
