Default MSI 790FX-GD70 with DDR3 2000

I need to verify the claim that the following motherboard supports DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000)
MSI 790FX-GD70 AM3 AMD 790FX

I'd like to pair it with the following RAM
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000)

Here is the quote from the person that claims to have been able to get this ram working.
Quote:
Works well with :AMD Phenom II X4 965, G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000) Desktop Memory Model F3-16000CL9D-4GBRH and Kingston SNV225-S2
Make sure to manually increase memory voltage to recommended 1.65 in the bios and set clocks to 9-9-9-27.
*Also, Plus rep to anyone who can link to outside proof from a reputable source that this or a nearly identical setup can support PC3 16000 under at least a similar OC. (Basically some kind of assurance that this is real)

This is a thread I'll be paying close attention to. However, there's one thing I should mention.

The timings on the RAM you linked, suck. Is going for 2000 worth it, with 9-9-9-27 timings?

Especially when I hear that the AM3 chips prefer tighter timing over higher frequencies. I havent ever tested this myself using my RAM but I've heard people getting better results with tight timing and 1333 over 1600 with looser timings. I'm sure this goes the same for 2000mhz ram.

It will work, but it may be hard to get stable. I think even to run at 1600 is supported, but is considered a memory "OC". As mentioned, 1333 with tight timings is the sweet spot!

It probably depends upon the IMC in your CPU. Some people can get 1800MHz with CAS 7 on the GD70. Other people struggle to get 1600MHz. The safest would be 1333MHz.

On the OCZ forums, Tony said that 1600MHz is only worth it if you can get at least 2600MHz CPU-NB.

No it wont work at 2000 mhz. The max I have seen is around 1800 and timings is an issue. If you are going for the newer batches of CPU's with C3 steppings I would recommened 1600 ram with good timings, otherwise go for 1333 and OC.

Very very good point. But it also begs the question of whether that setup could handle tighter timings. I'm willing to spend the cash to find out. I'd love to find something along the lines of a Classified board with the overkill OC settings to really push this ram. I'm interested to see what the limitations of that processor really are.

There is about a 1% chance it will work. Even with the new C3 stepping of Phenom II, the IMC tops out at about 1800mhz, which is still very good if you ask me. My x2 550 wouldn't even run 1600mhz no matter how much NB or CPU-NB I gave it. Your best bet for AM3 is a good kit that can do 1333mhz 6-6-6 timings or better, and then clock the northbridge high. As others have said, NB frequency is key.
