My DDR2 set runs 1000mhz at CL4

Umm... I could think of like plenty of reasons... but two that really stand out are minimum fps in a mmorpg that is very graphic intensive during large scale fights.... and the fact that your hand-eye coordinator and reaction time are faster when you can see the entire monitor in focus and not using your peripheral vision to pick up the edges of the monitor.. Another factor might be viewing distance... i mean... is this a serious comment ?

BTW: My ddr2 can run at cl4 in the mid 900s... if you can get CL5 at a decent clock... I would say you did pretty well...
