AMD Overclocker
![]() |
I got some Mushkin DDR2 800 RAM, Its stock timings are 4-4-4-12. If I run it @ 1066mhz 5-5-5-15 2.0v it seems to work well. But I'm sort of a memory n00b so, which one will yield better performance?
I guess it comes down to clock speed over timings, I know lower numbers are better when it comes to timings.....but I have no idea really. ![]() Help please.

Afaik, tighter timings are much more important than the speed in which it runs (megahurtz).

I vote timings, but i think its a very minor difference. Should do both and do some benchmarks!

For AMD I allways perferd to leave timings tight, and push to the limit.
However if its holding your overall OC lower, then adjust from there. In the end you'll likely end up with two different scenarios, one of which will slightly be better. It's all about finding the max of each component, and blending them together.

RAM speed is how quick data can be transferred during a cycle, and cas latency is the number of cycles it takes to gain access to and return that data.
__________________You can then effectively compare speed and timings by multiplying their cycle time by their cas latency. Transfer Latency = Cycle Time*CAS Latency therefore 800MHz (Cycle Time = 2.5 ns) at CAS 4-4-4-12 Transfer Latency = 2.5 ns*4 = 10ns 1066MHz (Cycle Time - 1.875 ns) at CAS 5-5-5-15 Transfer Latency = 1.875 ns*5 = 9.375 ns 1066MHz at 5-5-5-15 should theoretically be faster as 9.375 ns << 10 ns

Well the stock timings are pretty tight, 4-4-4-12 are pretty nice timings. Even with a voltage increase I can't go any higher than 800mhz without it being unstable.
The best thing for me to do is probably buy Vantage or run a benchmark eh? ![]() + Rep for all who helped. More rep for anyone else to give good suggestions.

I have Mushkin DDR2 800 as well. I got the best benchmark with the stock CL4 timings and maxing out the volts to 2.2, then pushing it to 920 MHz.

SuperPI and SiSoft Sandra Memory benchmark should give an indication of your gained speed/performance. I'd give you a Vantage key, if I hadn't lost it.
