Dual channel offeres 5-15% performance increase over single channel. They make matched pairs for dual channel because the memory controller is accessing the 2 (or 4) sticks of ram as 1, so they have to be as close to physically identical as possible. Therefore, your instability is coming from your use of 2 different types of ram modules. get another stick of one of the ones you have and you will most likely be able to run dual channel stable.

Yup, that's why the trick nowadays is to find a 2x1gig setup that has lower timings.
