If you are wanting 2g it would be better to stay with the same stuff you have now if you can not afford to upgrade to 2x 1g sticks.
If you were to get the 2x 512 of xms there timings would have to be set the same as the slower value ram, and that could pose a stability issue.

el-cheapo RAM can some times be good. i am runnin 4 512 sticks of A-Data junk at timings of 2.5-3-3-6 @ 480mhz...and it is $30 PC3200 ram
I would see how fast you could get your cheap ram going and if it is decent, get two more 512's of it. It is generally a bad idea to mix types of ram...and dual channel most likely will not work too well with mixed sets

all of your RAM will only run as fast as your slowest stick... so even if you spend extra money on better RAM it wouldn't get you anything better. all 4 sticks of RAM would only be able to run with the looser timings of your value select.
the best option would be to can the 2x512 value RAM and get 2x1gb performance. g.skill or OCZ

well 2x1gb will almost always allow for a better OC than 4x512 and with 1x1gb you'll be able to run a 1T command rate instead of the 2T you'll have to run w/ 4.
2x1gb will give better performance... it will really come down to your budget
