Default MSI - The source of problems

Hi there .

Whaat I wanna do with my K8N SLI Platinum is to take it off from my PC and brake , blast ,destroy and finally throw away . it's the worst choise I could make with no doubt . I'm gonna describe my preety story about me and my damn mobo .

1. 1.5 year ago I got my new computer . Everything seemed to be alright ,but actually it wasn't . The problem was ... integrated network card . After messin' round with my damn mobo I tried non-integrated network card and worked perfecty . The integrated card turned off automatically after 2-3hours of downloading .

Two days ago I took my pc apart , because I wanted to clean it , so obviously I took off the damn mobo . After I cleaned everything I put the mobo back into the case AND WHAT ? Integrated Sound Card doesn't work ,great I think what was the best in that damn mobo doesn't work either ( It was an integrated SB Live 24-bit not so bad actually )

But it's not the end ! The best I'm gonna tell now .

Few months ago after reading some forums I wanted to Overclock my CPU . As You probably well know the damn mobo was advertised as a good mobo for overclockers (I guess they were joking ) . And what ? I change FSB from 200 to 210 and it's working , to 215 it's working , to 220 and my LCD doesn't turn on ?! it's unbeliveable ... I rised up the voltages nothing , I change ram settings nothing ... No words to describe how angry I am and how big crap the damn mobo is .

And the last one entertainment made especially for me by MSI - Live update . I wanted to update my BIOS , Maybe it was all fault of BIOS , so I'm downloading the soft from MSI's webstite and guess what .. It obviosly doesn't work . I mean in last step when I'm clicking on start update it closes and nothing , nothing , nothing .

The warranty is expired . Never , ever MSI . And one more thing - it costed about 200$ when I bought it . I'd probably buy two better mobos instead of this one .

This topic has two targets :
1. Tell everyone that they should consider buying MSI's mobos (Especially K8N SLI)
2. Does anybody know if there's any solution to my problem about CPU overclocking , I hope there's somebody who's able to help me .

Greets ,
Disappointed Silt

I think you may have gotten a bad board. Everything on my board works, and has worked for quite awhile. Also, mine overclocks just fine! I got my Amd Athlon 4600 X2 to 2.9Ghz stable, but had to drop it back. As my air cooling just doesn't cut it with anything over 2.7Ghz.

I was expecting some comments , maybe somebody had similar experiences ?
Mayby somebody has the same mobo (K8N SLI) and hasn't got any problem with O/C ? I just wanna know ...

Sorry for writing post by post ,but my topic went down and probably nobody would read it ,if I edited it .

Actually it IS a great overclocking motherboard, if you knew how to overclock it. 220Mhz sounds about right, you need to drop down your Hypertransport link speed down, it has to stay around 1Ghz or below to be stable. So drop it down to 3x to continue overclocking.

Don't blame the motherboard if you're new to overclocking.

bad board or your installing it incorrectly? Maybe your grounding it somehow that is frying the individual components in it.

i've owned a few MSI boards and i really like them. they're simple to overclock and run like a tank. matter of fact, one of my MSI boards is still floating around here somewhere on OCN, and i don't know about him, but i've put that thing thru hell. 1.7vcore on a 3500+, i've maxed out the chip voltage, ran the PCI-E at 110+ MHz, and it still kept on ticking. i've tried to blow procs up. i've tried to fry the motherboard just to see if i can do it....and i failed.

i honestly think you just got a bad board. it happens to every company.

i have a msi board right now. in my bios there is only a few options for overclocking.

fsb
voltages:nb,ram,vcore,sb,cpu vtt
ram timings

i disabled all i was supposed to(c1e,spread spectrum etc)

i cant get mine stable past 2.33 on my intel e6300 no matter what i do and i tried for weeks

now it may just be i dont know what im doing but i did read alot on anandtech forums on what peoples bios settings are and what they did to achieve decent overclocks to no avail. i posted some things on some other forums(seeing how people here do not really use the board i have) andpeople were stumped.

i was thinking it could be that the bios is limited on my board.....

anyway, my overclocking experience with msi has been negative so far but u might just have to do a little more research. if u already have then maybe your in the same boat i am

i will be getting a blood iron as soon as newegg refunds me for my 2900pro wich sterted artifacting like crazy(man i got some bad luck LOL). that should have an overabundance of bios options to fiddle with. hopefully i'll have some better luck with that board.

good luck to you too bro

Err you know those are pretty average overclocking options? Most motherboards wont have more options then that, well other then a DFI

IDK, my MSI has bios options for virtually anything you can imagine.

yeah i know but i am missing alotof stuff that is present in the 680i chipset...when i bought the board i knew nothing of overclocking lol

its fustrating when u have a bunch of helpful experienced overclockers helping you and even they cant explain why your board wont post. i was just trying to make a point that sometimes it is the board
