No OC'ing or anything, light gaming and just general email, web browsing, word processing etc.

One of the AMD 780G chipset MB's sounds like it would fit his needs.
The OB video can even play Crysis on low settings and he could add a video card later if he wants.
You can get a good one for around $100 and a cheep one for around $60.

If an extra $20 can be dropped on the board, this one is excellent.

I honestly wouldn't trust any of the cheaper ones for gaming, but I don't have first hand experience with them so maybe u can /shrug.
