Default Heatsink Help

On the second computer I am having some issues. Recently it has been running at 1.8ghz even though it is supposed to run at 2.2ghz (AMD Athlon 64 3400+) so I crack the case open for kicks and I notice that the heatsink for the chipset on the motherboard had completely come off. Whatever glue type crap was holding it on failed miserably. Anyone know where to buy some heatsink glue junk?

It shouldn't just be on there with glue/adhesive. There should be some plastic clips, at the very least, holding down the chipset cooler snug.

Fry's Electronics, or any similar electronics shop, should have thermal adhesive available. I know my local Fry's stores (the ones close to me) sell Arctic Silver Premium Silver Adhesive and Arctic Silver Arctic Alumina Thermal Adhesive.

Be advised, though, that using thermal adhesives will more than likely permanently bond the surfaces; there'd be no turning back if you choose this solution.

Good luck!

Yeah there were two little hooks beside the heatsink and one popped out. I went into bestbuy today and I was amazed how much more I knew than any of the geek squad guys there. They couldn't figure out what I was talking about. Anywho, thanks for the help

Super glue will ruin your CPU, TIM (the "Glue" you were talking about eariler) Is ment to go in between the tiny cracks in your HSF & CPU to make the contact area better.

In theory you could run your computer without any TIM, but you would have to Lap your CPU and HSF, so i wont go into that.

Just be sure to use some TIM.
