Default 790GX the Best AMD Chipset?

So, assuming I don't plan on Quadfire, is the 790GX the best AM2+ Northbridge? Is the 790FX better, other than 3 or 4 PCI-E 2.0 slots?

790FX with SB750 is better (Unless you want to utilize the integrated GPU of the 790GX)

Heck, even the SB600 ones are better but they don't overclock well with Phenoms

The FX is considered the top of the line due to features and PCI-E slots. The G isn't far behind. Some may find the extra gpu a convenience or a pain in the but. :-)

Overall performance wise they are probably the exact same. However, you should make sure you get the 750 south bridge. Oddly enough the south bridge seems to be more important to the phenoms than the north bridge in terms of overclocking.

Alright, 750 SB is most important.

The 790's onboard is decent, right? Enough to play TF2 at decent detail?

They are basically the same chipset. The only issue is that the 790GX PCI-Ex configuration for Crossfire is 8x 8x and 16x for single card. The 790FX allows for x16 x16 crossfire and x16 for single. But thats the only difference. Its the same SB750.

Newegg has an awesome price with a Biostar board that I use. Its the 790GX A2+ and its 40 dollars off when you buy combo with the Phenom 940. It makes it essentially a 55$-60$ 790GX board. Look into it. I think most of the benchies are with the 790GX (check 3dguru) and they got it to 3.8 @ 1.448 volts.

Welcome to AMD.

The HD3300 is enough to play COD4 @ 50fps with medium to high details on a 1024x768 monitor. But I had a crappy low end dual core then. Ymmv!

I can't say anything about TF2 since I've never played it, but on my 780G's integrated graphics (Lower clocked version of the 790GX's) I could play Left4Dead on medium at 1024x768 smoothly

Since TF2 is a source engine game, I think it'll perform well too

Welcome to AMD? lol

I had a Venice 3200+, an Opty 165, and a Brisbane before this. I just bought this on launch day to make fanboys jealous, lol. I've always been an AMD fan.

So, I'm kind of thinking...

Should I get a Phenom II 920 and the BIOSTAR board, run onboard video for the time being, and sell my current CPU, Mobo, and GPU?

---or---

Phenom II 920 + 790FX / SB 750 and keep my current card.

---or---

Phenom II 940 BE + BIOSTAR and sell card.

---or---

Phenom II 940 BE + 790FX / SB 750 Board, and keep card.

I'm not good with decisions, lol.

Do you game? The on board video is pretty good. Not stellar, but it handles things quite nicely. With the 790GX, you never need to have a video card on hand. When ever you run into problems, the video will always work. With the FX you need to have the video card on hand since it doesn't include video. But if you are going to go crossfire, right now it doesn't matter if your lanes are [x16 x16] or [x8 x8 (x16 single)] since the crossfire perfomance impact is negligible. You would only lose a few Fps. But Do you really game?

See the thing that I dont like about AMD's chipsets is that the ACC is not available on single lane motherboards like the 780G. Hopefully things will look up in the future. But heck, you can play with a single card on a 790GX and not worry about anything.

If I were buying a PhII, then I would go for the GX. But I dont game that much.
