Hey all, just joined.
I purchased an X3 720 last week to put in a Gigabyte 790fx DS-5 board, but it wouldn't post so I thought the CPU was DOA. I decided before I RMA'd the CPU I would buy an ASROCK AOD 790GX 128 board. Got the board last night installed the X3 720 and it booted right up. I loaded the 1.40 bios, went in and changed acc to auto, and I had the fourth core unlocked. The thing is is my cpu is 0851, week 51 of 2008. The only problem I had was I could not overclock the chip in the bios. Didn't have a problem with AMd overdrive, but every time I tried in the bios it wouldn't boot. So, I thought I just got a bad fourth core. Then I entered the bios shut down acc and the fourth core was gone. Went back in and set acc to ALL CORES and my fourth core came back. Not only that I can overclock it and have been running stable at 3.5. Here is a screen shot of cpuz and task manager, and I will include a link to cpuz validation. So ther is more than one way to unlock these cores besides the ACC to Auto. CPUz: ![]() Screen shot:

Well obviously if the BIOS is able to automaticaly detect your fourth core, then when you set it to All Cores it should work too. I, however, find it strange that you couldn't oc your proc via the BIOS while you were on Auto coz I had no problem with that. Also, it's quite easy to get a cpu-z valid, and it doesn't mean your oc is stable. You'd need to run at least 4h of OCCT or Prime95 to make that sure. About your CPU's week of prod, well it's no surprise since so far we've identified 4 different batches that are working, yours included
![]() But it's nice to have one more 720be unlocked out there.

Hi folks, new here.
__________________I recently purchased a Phenom II X3 710 + Asrock AOD790GX/128M, and easily unlocked the fourth core. (If somebody can tell me how to determine the batch number, I'd appreciate it. Presumably I have a 0904.) I dropped the multi a bit for good measure, not expecting it to be stable at stock speeds. It seemed ok at about 2.4 Ghz, but it did reboot unexpectedly a few times, which may or may not have been related to hardware. I don't really need four cores, so I decided to disable it for now. One thing I noted is that putting ACC back to "disabled" does not disable the fourth core again -- you need to clear the CMOS, at least on this board. Also, why are people comparing these to a 940? These are more like (defective) 910s, aren't they? I wouldn't expect it to overclock as high, or it would have been binned as a 945.

720s are 940s with a disabled core from my understanding, so enabling the fourth core should make it completely equal to the 940.

my damn board is crap with the current bios. i enable ACC in any shape or form and it refuses to post. Clearing the cmos is quite a chore as well. what really irks me is its supposed to have a backup bios in case the primary one fails and yet it dont work worth hell.
