Default Botched BIOS flash?

I flashed my mobo's bios a week back, first time didn't reboot, so I manually did it after letting chill for 20 minutes. Rebooted back in Win 7 with some trouble, but eventually managed to flash it back to the original bios. (Flashing was done in Windows). Later, the bootmgr for Win 7 became corrupt, couldn't re-install it, so went with XP and now using Ubuntu as my OS.

Here's the kicker -- I think the BIOS botched because my 2048mb ram sticks are being read as 1792 in bios, and 1.7gb in Ubuntu. (Currently have just one stick in, both do read 1792 and should both be 2048. They where both 2048 before the flash.)

Since I can still use everything, should I re-flash my bios to the version that shipped with my board (available on Biostar website) and do a proper boot from flash drive/cd flash?

As long as you flash in the BIOS from a USB drive/CD, then use whatever BIOS you want. I think problems occur more often when you flash from an OS environment. Make sure to set the BIOS to defaults before flashing, and then reconfigure after flashing. Sometimes old settings will stay and complicate things.

Flashing from Windows is what I do believe what did it. Thanks for the reassurance.

Off to find how exactly to flash from a USB drive or CD!

Edit: Just reflashed, USB this time, flash went fine, but both sticks are still read as 1792mb. Just seems too odd of a number, and exactly the same for both sticks, to be a problem with the RAM. :S

You've got integrated video, check your shared memory settings in your BIOS as this is probably what's eating up your missing 256Mb.

Whenever I flash my BIOS, I have to set everything back to the way it was before the update since the flash is like clearing your CMOS. I hope this helps you regain your missing memory. (heh that sounded strange ).

Oh **** me. That's probably it, I admit, I've never used integrated (its one of the first things I turn off if I clear my CMOS) until now to help rule out possible hardware malfunction. But I have several discrepancies now. Bios sees 3840mb, Memtest86 sees 3839mb, and PerlMon (Using Ubuntu atm) sees 3650mb, which could make sense... but why would Ubuntu need 446mb of ram for video on the gui? Still can't get Windows 7 to install again either after the first bios flash and somehow killed the bootmgr.

Edit: Woot! Everything is back up after a good format, a bios flash, and some more playing around!
