I just bought a ASUS M4A79XTD EVO 1800O.C./1600/1333 and I have 2x2GB Kingstone HiperX 1800MHz 8-8-8-24 1.7-1.9V . By default the memory is set in BIOS at 1333MHz , 1.5V , I have raised the voltage to 1.7 and lowered the timings at 8 to match the specs and I can set the frequency at 1600 and I would like to set it at 1800 . I'm just learning how to overclock and I would apreciate some advices . If I keep the 1600MHz what's a good voltage ? And if the frequency is at 1600MHz can I lower the latency to 7 or 6 ? Does anyone has a similar set up , how it's the best way to get 1800MHz ? My processor is 955 and cooler Mugen 2 .
Thank you . |

I'm having a problem with this MB to but its not my RAM. To get to 1800 you would have to raise the reference clock. My RAM is stable at 1600 with 1.5 volts but not stable at 17xx no matter what timings or voltage. You should just look at the specs for your RAM to figure out the voltage.
This MB cannot get my CPU any higher than 3.7 with 1.45 volts. Even if I push the volts to 1.55 it wont be stable at anywhere above that. It will fail on prime95 after a few hours with BSOD. ANY OC that is unstable will just BSOD, in my experience with this MB. I think it is just really cheap quality and I might get a new one... Probably the Gigabyte UD4P is what I would get. I have the scythe Mugen 2 also and load temps are great with 1.45 volts max is 50C on a simulated hot summer day with a heater close to my intake fans. With ambient temps at 72F load temps are 46C after 6 hours prime95. This is just what I have found out by messing around the past couple days.

anything past 1333mhz starts to put more stress on the imc of the chip, amd only officially supports 1333mhz ram, anything else above that is done via the motherboard o/c the ram.

Thanks for the advice , I figured it out . It seems so simple now :P . Unfortunately as smoothcig said , this board is very unstable . At 1600 MHz everything runs smoth , but over that I have to play a lot with voltages , HT , multipliers to get the right combination or else BSOD or CMOS reset needed . Got it to work at 3.7 CPU and 1800 RAM , any higher than that and it crashes .
@2001ODISSEY , at 1600MHz it runs with no problems |

I have just replaced my Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P with the Asus board. The Gigabyte took the P2 2.8 triple core to stable 3.7GHz at 1.5V using all four cores and Geil 1666 memory. The Gigabyte turned itself off, however and would not reboot, so I replaced it with the Asus and have yet to start cranking it up.
Generally if you O/C with the multiplier and push the Northbridge up a little that will increase the memory frequency. I have personally found little payback from changing memory timings. The Geil runs at 9s standard and if you leave it set at Auto will go to 7s after overclocking anyway. I have found no noticeable benefit from messing with the timings on this setup - your mileage may vary... Mick. |
