Default Help with GA-MA785GM-US2H + Phenom II x4 955BE

Greetings! I am migrating from an intel build (GA-G31M-S2C + E7400) to this, and so far is been nothing but frustrating. But first things first. The rest of the system is:

Coolermaster Elite 340 case
Coolermaster Extreme Power 550W PSU (crossfire and sli ready)
Coolermaster Hyper 212+
2x1 GB DDR2-800 Hynix RAM (Will upgrade this to 2x2 GB Kingston Hyper X DDR2-1066)
Sapphire Radeon HD4850 512 MB GDDR3
250 GB S-ATA Western Digital HDD

I'm recycling most of my system, save the CPU and Motherboard. My old rig was really snappy and I was really happy about it, but I wanted to try an AMD quad since I have heard so may good things about them. My old rig scored 12,009 in 3DMark06 with all at stock except the CPU, running at 3200 MHz (400x8), so I was expecting at least some increase in that score. But that score is the least of my concerns, and my primary is that the system feels slower overall, starts windows vista slower and doing about anything takes longer. I am getting very frustrated with this. I updated the bios to F5 to see if the problem would solve, but to no avail. Some help would be appreciated, before I lose my sanity.

That mobo features SB710 chipset(Does not feature ACC) which is not good for overclocking. Look at the GA-MA780XT-UD4P. This features SB750 chipset and ACC. It will be $40 more...and you will need DDR3.

If you want to stay DDR2 use this board.... Again about $40 more but features SB750 chipset..http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/...GA-MA790X-UD3P

Wow, you are completely wrong.

SB710 does indeed feature ACC. l2computers

The only difference between SB750 and SB710 is the ability for RAID 5 or something unimportant that most people will not use.

I've used the board and it clocks well, but I'll admit that it takes a while to load windows. I never really tried to find out why as the rig was not for me and it probably would not be shut down very often.

... no it isn't. Stop posting. The only difference between SB750 and SB710 is that SB750 supports RAID 5, which most mid range builds will not use.

well, it takes a long time to load windows indeed (much more than the aforementioned setup), and plus the 3dmark06 decreased by about 1500points, using the same video card. I have further tested two other kits of RAM with the board, and it's the same story, so it isn't a RAM issue... Any more thoughts?

hi! welcome to ocn.

if it's just about the snappiness, were you using vista as well with your previous setup? coz i swear amd systems are more responsive than c2ds and c2qs. although purchasing the right memory for it is one of the keys. amd systems love lower timings over high freq.
also, the difference between 2gb and 4gb of ram in vista is kinda huge especially when it's fully updated. you may want to use the x64 version of vista too.

about the 3dmark06 score, you should be getting at least 14-15k with that 955be at stock. did you have your e7400 overclocked? you might as well try overclocking the 955be. you might as well overclock its northbridge. i get a fair amount of increase in performance just by raising it from 1800mhz to 2400mhz. it gives me about 500pts in 06 and about 0.5-1.0secs in superpi.

are you sure you've installed the drivers well? you might want want to get the latest drivers from the gigabyte website instead of using the drivers that came out with the cd.
and also the latest catalyst drivers from the ati website. i know this is silly but you might as well want to do a full reformat with that.

good luck and let us know

oh come on jim! sb710 is basically just a sb750 without the raid5 support.
