Default more problems with ECS?

after reading so much opinion and no facts at all on the subject i thought id just throw this out there
a quick google search returns

about 8,190,000 for problems MSI.
about 7,550,000 for problems gigabyte.
about 18,900,000 for problems asus.
about 2,780,000 for problems ecs.

doesnt seem to agree with what a lot of ppl around here say about ECS.

got any facts on the matter?
opinions arent worth much if anything.
and remember an apple isnt crap just because you might happen to prefer an orange.

It's not just raw # of problems...any data on how many boards ECS sells? They're definitely not a Tier 1 manufacturer, so it would be less than Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, etc. I would fathom that the problems-to-sales ratio is higher.

Excessively Crappy Stuff is called that for a reason.

One of them is the high DOA or DOSAA (Dead On Soon After Arrival) failure rate, it seems. I've heard anecdotal examples of K7S5A boards failing on first use / within ~2 weeks. Other ECS boards have had similar failure modes.

That said, that reputation is why I (presumably representative of the average enthusiast) don't buy them in the first place so the statistics you have would be biased more towards the enthusiast boards that have failures.

i know of 2 k7s5a boards that are still in use today, one of which is my old one now on its 3rd owner, and i also know of other brands that have died or given problems not long after purchase
ive actually got a dead MSI s478 board and a mate has a working ECS s478 board still in use. ive also got 2 dead s939 ASUS boards sitting here,a mates had a few dead asus aswell i think everyone i know thats into PCs has had something from ASUS die on them at least once.
if we apply your logic to that then noone should bother buying anything.
or they should all be buying ECS if they ignore your reports of failures rather than ignoring mine.

anyone got any facts on the matter?
links showing volume of sales for the various manufacturers or any RMA figures?

I bought a ECS 7050m-m as my first board with a PCIe x16 slot. Thing worked great (no overclock, and a terrible 95 watt cpu limit) But other than that was a great board. ran ran ran and ran some more. Sold it and bought a Asus board(in my sig). I have to say I think other than the sata port placement on the ECS , it was all around a better CONSTRUCTED board IMO, slide pcie locks (ECS) pcie bendy plastic crap locks (asus) is my main complaint. We shall see how long this asus lasts. Ill be the first to admit Asus isnt making nearly the quality of product as they were even 5-10 years ago. My first build ever was on the Asus P4P800-VMz(with my beast of a ATI Radeon 9000 pro 256 mb PCI VGA). That board wass greatttt.

I haven't had any problems with their motherboards, but I owned a laptop made by them, and it randomly died one day. Never figured out what the problem was. I left it on overnight and the next day it was dead. Now that i've been on OCN for a good long time I think i've determined that the problem was that instead of using TIM for a heatsink in there, I superglued the heatsink to the chip. lol

some info from wikipedia
Quote:
from the wikipedia Asus page
In 2008, shipments from ASUS, ECS, Gigabyte, and MSI totaled 104.86 million units. ASUS led with 52 million units, followed by ECS with 20 million, MSI with 18 million, and Gigabyte with 16.6 million.[citation needed]
Quote:
from the wikipedia Gigabyte page
GIGABYTE is considered a Tier 1 motherboard manufacturer (based on units sold) along with MSI, ECS and Asustek. They shipped approximately 19 million motherboards in 2008 (16 million of them branded).[citation needed]
Quote:
from the wikipedia ECS page
Elitegroup Computer Systems (TSE: 2331), also known as ECS, is a Taiwan-based electronics firm. It is the fourth largest PC motherboard manufacturer in the world (after Asus, Gigabyte Technology, and MSI), with production reaching 24 million units in 2002. Many of these motherboards have been produced for OEM customers and are used in systems assembled and sold by such brand-name companies as IBM and Compaq. Its main competitor used to be Micro-Star International.

The company has since concentrated on broadening its product range. After ECS's purchase of laptop manufacturer Uniwill in 2006, the company has also been making its mark in the design and manufacture of laptops, desktop replacement computers and multimedia products. ECS computers are sold by Fry's Electronics under the “Great Quality” (“GQ”) brand.

Founded in 1987, ECS is headquartered in Taiwan with operations in North America, Europe and the Pacific Rim. The company merged with PCChips (Hsing Tech Enterprise Co., Ltd), a major manufacturer of low-cost motherboards, in 2005.[1] In June 2003, ECS was selected for two years in a row for Business Week Magazine's exclusive Information Technology 100 list.

Someone who worked at Fry's in this forum commented ECS boards have a very high return rate.
