Question New BIOS neccessary for nf4-Ultra-D

One of my friends just built a new system and he wants me to help him overclock it. Problem is, I've never used a DFI board before. I usually stick with budget boards because I don't have a lot of money. I've never flashed a BIOS and would like to know if its necessary for his rig. He's got an Opteron 170 Dual Core, DFI NF4-UltraD, 1gb dual channel kit of budget RAM, and a 6600GT or 6800GT, can't remember off the top of my head. I'm not looking for the biggest OC of all time, so is it necessary to change the BIOS and if so, can you provide me with a good link on which BIOS to use and how to flash it. Thank you.

best site for dfi related stuff is http://www.dfi-street.com. if the MB was bought new it will most likely have the most recent version of the bios (6/2005) i think is the latest put out by DFI. but that website has many user created bios's that some say overclock better than factory.

Depending on what ram he has, he'll have to choose a BIOS accordingly. You can't expect to buy a DFI and not have to use a little elbow grease. Those boards can prove to be extremely temperamental.

I reccomend that you do NOT mess up with BIOS like what I did. I messed with BIOS and I got no display and 3 beeps and a pause and it goes on... You know how I solved the problem? I bought a new board.

That's just not gonna fly owning a DFI. If you're not comfortable flashing a BIOS, then buying an enthusiast board is the wrong choice.

He's got some Mushkin RAM. 2 512 sticks, Green series. No heatspreaders. There wasn't a whole lot of information I could find. Pretty sure they're dual channel and run @ 3-4-4-8 DDR400. I'm planning on using some dividers. Another thing, I wasn't the one who bought it. He is new to the whole building computers thing and asked for my help. He knew that was a good board, but didn't know what he was getting himself into, thats why I'm helping him. Also, I've looked on DFI-street but haven't been able to send a lot of time there. Should I create an account there and start posting about which BIOS is best for this situation or can someone recomend me one to get going. Also, provide a link for a page containing the BIOS. We haven't set up the rig, only powered it on for a few seconds to check fan orientations. What method is best for flashing BIOS? I've seen how to flash to DFI's official BIOS's and am confident in my ability to do that. However, I've never used ISO's before and don't want to mess around with an ISO flash until I've had some experience in that area. Any FAQ's or links would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

found a good thread on ISO's, so I'm pretty confident I can handle that now. However, I'm still looking for the thread w/ the ISO's on it.

http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21751

Is this the link that also contains all the BIOS's for DFI boards? I'm pretty sure this contains BIOS's for all DFI boards and I need to pick the BIOS best for me when I boot to the CD, but could some1 verify/correct me.

DFI has some way to flash the bios from the floppy drive. makes it all really easy to do.
