Oracle, without question. It is better than pretty much every other DBMS, and it runs on pretty much any platform you can name. About the only other DBMS in the same class is DB2, but that runs on fewer platforms.

And don't ever let anyone try to convince you that SQL Server is in the same class. It has improved over the years, but it's still a toy compared to Oracle.

I don't know much about MySQL except from what I have read, but it seems like the best choice for a free database.

I'd have to agree about Oracle, I'd love to be working in it but it's just not an option at the moment. Regarding free DBs I believe both MySQL and PostgreSQL have their place. One of these days I intend to get some spare time at home and see how well I can set up a data abstraction layer that'd work for MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MySQL.

It probably already exists. If nothing else, I have to think there are ODBC drivers for Postgres and MySQL.
