This is due to outside threads interfering with the program (most likely.) I encountered this in my benchmark, raising thread priority can decrease this issue.

Unfortunately this program was coded for Windows, and is a bit hard to port without completely rewriting it. It could be emulated by Wine, but I believe it is best to have things running natively on such a distro.

I think the best thing to do for benchmarks is to use C++. Its got a somewhat steeper development curve than C# or java, but it can offer better memory management to the professional programmer.

However, given the XNA development environment, it would be cool to see a homemade GPU benchmark come from the community on a C# platform. Sry *nix users, pwnt.

A GPU benchmark would have to be written in dx, opengl, or something similar. C code (for all forms of C) compiles to x86 machine code and is executed by an x86 CPU

Yeah, and XNA would suck besides because it's extra framework that would effectively be "benchmarked."

I don't really know any C/C++. If an open source benchmark program were to be created in such languages, it would be better if it was cross platform, for use in OCNix, for example.

XNA would not nullify scores. XNA is simple a way of simplifying the process of programming it and won't have a majorly adverse affect on FPS. Even if it did the effect would be consistent throughout Windows PC and it would still function as a benchmark.

XNA and .Net are both capable of running on Linux, however it is not easy. You can use Moma to check for compatibility.
