What is the best compiler for C based languages, there are alot of java ones that are popular but i have no idea about C

I use the Microsoft Visual C++ one for C/C++ applications. You can download an express version that has most of the functionality of the full program for free. They have one for C# too if I remember correctly.

I agree, MS's express editions of their visual studio series is the most robust and flexible IDE you can get for free. If you are a student, you probably get the entire version for free as well.

Microsoft Visual Studio 2008, if you like games use 2005+XNA. Basically all of the GUI code and events are done for you.
