Default What software does a bank need?

I've got a job interview for a programming position, problem is I don't really know what software i'd be making for a bank so I really should have SOME idea if they happen to ask me. My guess would be maintenance of existing products and databases.

I could really use your help guys

No, no compentent programmer would use MS Access as a tool. Sorry, for "Databases" that would be Vulcans area, and I'd bet he'd suggest Oracle, I myself, never dealing with Oracle would use MySQL. But, you have to remember if you are programming for a bank, maybe making your own database in C++ or Java (I remember making a db in java...) is what you will do. Another thing you will probably do is create secured networks, something that exceeds microshafts networking, and several other things, there use to be a guy on here named "Jared" he'd know better than anyone.

You'de definatly be dealing alot with databases, and like MrSmiley said, they most likley use custom jobs. Other than that, you might have to solve the other employies tech problems.

I do think that with them it would either ne Oraracle or developing a custom system wiht C++ and SQL. Make sure that with the intervieew you stress the security abilities and security ideas that you have for our system, there have been alot of cases lately with banks looking information and that would be something that you can use to keep their interest.

they would most likely have their own system developed that was secure with VPN's to allow the bank users to connect, you'd probly have to create software to search for records and edit them or manage accounts but do they want you to redesign their entire software suite or just add to it?

This is 100% correct.

A large bank might be using any of the big databases, e.g. Oracle, DB2, TeraData, SyBase, etc. (No MS Access, Zipnogg; that's for personal use only.) So it's more important to know about databases in general, particularly the SQL language and the best practices for programming against a database, than to be an expert in any specific database product (unless you're trying to be a DBA). For a programmer, which back end database is being used makes little to no difference anyway.

The applications you could be coding could be almost anything, and in almost any language! Did the job posting list any specific skills they were looking for? I have no doubt that they use products that you have probably never even heard of; i.e. don't expect to be limited to SQL and C++, as some people have suggested. Ever heard of Informatica, or any other ETL tool? How about BizTalk, Inrule, or other business rules engines? Microstrategy, Cognos, or other OLAP tools? While unlikely that they would expect you to know about such technologies coming in cold, knowing something about them if they use them could help your cause.
