How about build upon the original Sim City which was recently released as open source?

In my C++ final we had to make the Risk game. Nothing elaborate, we compiled a program that rolls the dice three times, and determines a winner (player 1 or player 2) depending on who rolls higher/lower each time.

seems like a downright gracious teacher... My first semester of CS had us build a car dealership's inventory system complete with classes, stacks, etc.

There were no survivors.

Try finding real world uses for data structures, like I did with the vending machine. Apply them in a simulation so it is easy to see the implementation of them.

I had guys in my class using them for ways they'd never be used. For example they had characters that moved across a screen. Each space on the screen (left to right, in ascii) they stored in a queue, and then to move the character left they moved them down the queue. Sure it worked, but it made no sense to use a queue in such a way.

Might be too hard but make a program that allows you to build with legos in 3D. Nothing complex just the 4x2 blocks.

If he is just now taking 'data structures' he has likely not been introduced to any kind of graphics programming, so I'm guessing that would be too much.

Ok heres what you do, you take everything you learned this year, and cram it into a program making it take a ridiculously long time to trace through, with the end result being printing "42" to the console.

Your course seems to be the nearly identical to mine, we just finished stacks and queues, and were moving on to trees and graphics, since its a java course and java graphics are so easy.

I say you make a text based RPG, since you can use all kinds of data structures to interpret instructions from the command line and store the game data etc... It doesn't have to be a fully fleshed out one but maybe something like Dungeon Man, from Homestar Runner.
