a hardcore java/c# colleague of mine recommends both O'Reilly Learning Java and Java In A Nutshell.

Eclipse is probably the best java IDE out there. When doing anything java related, make heavy use of the Java API. It's one of the best resources I've come across for any language

It's $2. What's the worst that could happen? Besides amazon isn't like ebay - the deals tend to be legit, and programming books is one area where you can find a lot of dirt cheap used books in good condition. I've gotten a few (K&R for less than $1) and they've all been alright

The Java tutorials are very nice I think and are also free.
There are also two main IDEs for Java, Eclipse and Netbeans. I personally like Eclipse and I believe it is the more popular of the two. Eclipse is developed by IBM, and Netbeans by Sun (the same who created Java) so you'll see in some of the tutorials they talk about Netbeans. You can still use Eclipse, just wanted to bring that to attention.
