Ok so I know basic pretty well but I wanna do more and I want it to be cross platform. Would something like Python, Ruby or Java be good? Basically I want to write programs that are light weight and can run on linux, mac and windoze. Im looking into taking a programming course this summer for fun so any help is appreciated!

Java would be a good start. Code once, use it everywhere from windows to macs and linux and mobile phones etc... It's also pretty hawt at multithreading.

+1 for Java... I would highly recommend Python for it's opensource nature and very powerful scripting. Just because it's not as famous as the others doesn't mean it's not as good.

Java is a good start. Python is a very nice language to code in though. It's not as supported on mobile devices as Java. but it also runs better in my experience.

Java is all good, but Python is the better choice in my opinion. From what i hear Python can do everything C++ can do but with easier cross-platforming. If it can do what C++ can do then you've got a very versatile and multi-use language.

Unless your writing games I wouldn't choose C/C++, Java is good, C# is hard, and I haven't tried python.
