Is it one of those proprietary languages that they only use for the university?
__________________We have one in canada...it's called...uh...man I forget....but I never learned it, cause my teacher thought it'd make more sense to learn quickbasic? lmao. I dono, but personally I'd rather learn visual basic or c# or something...meh. Hopefully someone else has used this language. What's your problem anyways? What kind of program are you makng?

That seems to be a little movement that's sweeping computer science education... They're teaching languages that are syntactically simpler than more common languages (C++, etc).
__________________The idea is that since the major language used by companies changes about every 4 years, it doesn't make sense to teach that language in school (if they start teaching c++ freshman year, and by the time you graduate the world has moved on to Java and you don't know that, you're screwed). So instead, they teach you how to learn a language, and how to properly think about programming. It is much easier to see how a program should work when using QBasic or scheme, and it is very easy to spot poor code. Using these simple languages forces you to really think through a problem before you begin or you'll end up with a mess of loops within loops within loops and crappy unreadable code =D That's probably the reason that your teacher taught you QBasic hehe. That said, scheme used to be a mainstream language.... like 15 years ago haha. Now it's pretty much just used for teaching, and apparently some companies use it internally on a small scale for some reason.

Scheme is largely used in 'weed-out' classes in college. I don't believe it is a proprietary language, just an old language that never really took off. It is not useful for much anything, but if you have problems thinking logically, you are screwed. It is somewhat like Lisp with less ability.
I did know scheme back in the day, and if I do some digging, I could probably remember.
