For GUIs, Java is excellent, it works real well...You can do ridiculously complicated programs and you can also do the basic "Hello World!" program...

Thats good, because i want to make all the programs that never existed but i wanted. I think i might start with a simple notepad program (if possible) except with a nicer graphics interface.

Sorry, but i am a TOTAL newb at this. I did what he said for the very first step, but it doens't work. Also i noticed that he says to use JDK 5.0, but in mine it doesnt even have that, it has JRE?! Do i have a newer version or something? Should i try downloading another?

there is a good java windows editor/compiler available for free here:
http://spider.eng.auburn.edu/user-cg...ad_jgrasp.html

It should be all you need other than to install full JDK. I do believe that you will need a JVM as well for the GUI displays which you are going for, but you likely have that installed already.
