Yes, the Java SDK is free. The SDK comes with an IDE, but I would recommend a regular text editor like PSPad, Emacs, or TextPad.

As for the faqs, I found books to be the most helpful. One good books is Just Java 2, which is an official Sun Java book. Also, download the Java API reference at http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.html#docs, which can also be accessed at http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/ online. Make sure you have a goal when learning Java. Make up a project (maybe some small game), and do the project and learn Java at the same time, looking up stuff as you go. You will learn alot faster and retain more than just reading about Java.

Just Java 2 will be a good book then. If you have a public library you should be able to find it there.

There's 2 Java FAQs on the site here, go to the Application Programming section, then on the right, there should be 2 FAQs- a part 1 and a part 2- that go into the very basics of Java. Then, come back to us with questions. I will be more than glad to help.

Once you get the basics down, it's very easy to add on to what you already know...new stuff is based off the stuff you already know, for instance.
