recently built myself a new computer (Asus p5b Deluxe, c2duo e6400, OCZ pc6400 4,4,4,15 ATI edition, Connect 3d x1950xt if you are interested) and I got myself the vf900-Cu graphics card cooler as well. My problem is this (I haven't been able to find the answer searching the forum, sorry if its already been posted.) the power connector for it does not fit on the socket on the card (on the card is a mini 3-pin 12v socket), it is a full size 3-pin 12v plug which I could simply plug into the motherboard.
I would like to be able to control the fan using ATI Tool and I don't think that is possible if I plug the fan into the motherboard (this is also the reason that I didn't choose to use the "fan mate 2" provided.). I've done some research and found out that the stock fan is 12v at 0.42A and the vf900 is 12v at 0.14a. So my questions are: 1. If I plug it into the motherboard can ATI Tool control it? 2. If not, would it work if I did a bit of "modding" and put the connector from the original fan onto the wire for the new fan. Or could there be issues with too much current being sent to it or the rpm monitor giving false readings? Thanks in advance to anyone who attempt to give me a hand here. Milo |

edit: oops, you said you don't wanna use the Fan Mate...why not? why is it so important for you to use ATITool to control the rpms?

Well it's mainly because I don't like unnecessary noise, and I am forgetful. With the fan mate I would have to remember to turn it up every time I started a game. But also I wouldn't want it to be set to full unless it needed it as it would create annoying excess noise. With ATI Tool i can set it to try and keep it at a certain temp and the fan would vary its speed accordingly. I guess I'm just a bit of a control freak
, I would prefer to do it this way if at all possible.Milo |

ah...well, the VF900 is such a good cooler, you can game at the lowest setting and you temps will be fine...I guess it depends on the noise of your system, but for mine, I set it to ~2000rpm and I can't hear it above my other fans...the extra ~400rpm more it can do only lowers my temps like 1-2°C...

Thanks for your advice guys. I mounted the cooler and simply connected it to the motherboard without the fan mate. It's running at 100% and I can't hear it over my other fans (all 4 of the ones that come with the antec 900 case!). I may work out how to get it on the board at some point. But at the moment I'm definitely fine
.Once again, thanks. Milo |
