i just put a zalman vf-900cu on the card. it runs around 40 idle, but when i show the 3d view in ati tool, the temperature rapidly climbs to like 87 degrees!
i'm pretty sure i did a good job putting the cooler on... where could i begin to solve this problem?

Those temps are normal for the stock cooler, but you should be getting better then the stock coolers temps i would think.
Did you clean the chip and reapply some as5 before installing the new cooler?

The Vf900 is a terrible cooler for the X1950XT/XTXs. It may reduce idle temps but the load temps will be equal to or even higher than stock temps. I had it for 5 days before I replaced it with a TT Tidewater because I was so disappointed with it. You could try to increase the airflow in your case, this may help.

Do you have it running in 12V mode? That could help.

Those are way to hot for a VF900 (Unless you have high ambients)
I would reseat the heatsink with AS5, and make sure that you don't use to little.

In a 21C ambient with stock clocks I get 36C idle and 52C load.

I would easily recomend getting a different cooler. you said you have tried cleaning it down and I'm sure you put only enough as5 on there as you need. I get better temps then you with my stock HIS ice3q cooler. 45-47idle and 70-75* under load when using ati tool. even less if gaming or folding. this is with 1.525v on the core as well.
__________________that cooler seems like it might be decent but for a core with the ability to pump out lots of heat it just doesn't seem like it could or would cool that well.
