Default Spreading Thermal Paste on a GPU

What is the protocol for doing this? On my processor I was told to put a pea-size dab of thermal paste on top of it and let the pressure from the heatsink spread it out. That seemed to work well but I don't think it works the same for a GPU. In several tutorials I read about how to install the Thermalright HR-03 on your videocard when they added the thermal paste, they spread it on top of the GPU with like a credit card and then put a rice-sized dab on the actual heatsink portion that touches the GPU. I was wondering how you all thought I should go about this process as I'm about to order the x1950xt and an HR-03 to go with it.

GPUs have exposed dies (in most cases). Put a small dab and spread it. Use your finger wrapped in a plastic bag or credit card. Make sure you get full coverage and try to keep it thin.

Any suggestion on how thin? I like that idea with the bag though. I'd had trouble spreading with a credit card last time I had to apply paste.

As thin as possible. The TIM is suppose to just fill any microscopic gaps.
