Exclamation My x1950GT just DIED, new budget card needed

So I was just sitting here doing some usual Sims gaming when all of a sudden the temperature monitor started beeping very very loudly. I figured it was just my Seagate HD being stupid again so I turned the cooler up. Then it sounded again. I look at the video card temp and it read aprox. 137F. I turned it's fan up and the temperature didn't drop one degree within 3 minutes, what the hell?

So I turned off all my components, unhooked them from the PSU/Mobo and kept my fans going (used the paperclip trick to keep PSU active.) Rebooted after 20 minutes and the card was only at 135F, and started to rise. Then there was this sound that I can't decribe, monitor turned blue and flickered then my computer restarted...windows couldn't recognize my 1950gt when it rebooted and now my CPU is running hot. Any ideas on what this is? It's 71F in my room and the computer is on a tile floor so I know it's not external temp issues.

The card is dead now, it commited suicide when it wasn't even working hard. It's still under warranty so should I get a replacement or a new one? Planning to make my decision/purchase by friday night

137F is only 58C which is well below safe temps of a GPU, they can usually go up to 70C-80C safely, and some are rated for even 100C but I would never take mine that high.

You should never use the paperclip trick unless you need to, keeping the fans going isnt going to cool it that much faster than just turning the computer off.

I think thats what caused something to die.

I would RMA the card and never use the paperclip trick again, espically for something like this. Turning the computer off is plenty to cool the computer down, no need to keep the fans running.

Hmm...In this part of the woods we speak celsius, 137°f is only 58°c, that's well within reason.
Must be another reason, what were your CPU temps, are you OC'd?

An 8600GTS is a decent card to replace it with.

Most if not all are safe up to 120 degrees C, just not recommended to go that high as it lowers the life of your video card significantly.

If it's still under warranty RMA it and if you can tough it out just use your onboard video till you get it back.If money not a problem RMA and buy another 1950.
