Default Let's Hear it for DIY

Well on friday night I couldn't go anywhere cuz I was leaving on a trip on saturday...so at 11:30 at night I decided that I could sure use some RAMsinks to try and make my Radeon 7000 marginally less sucky.

Of course, I didn't have any RAM sinks. And I wanted them NOW!

But what I did have, was a chipset cooler from an old fried mobo, and a pair of industrial strength bolt cutters:

Hehehe so then:

And then:

I figured I could just cover the 4 chips with 2 sinks.

Unfortunately, the bolt cutter SOB had warped the sink and my files were all in the basement...which I couldn't access without waking people up. So, Mr.400 grit sand paper had to suffer:

Partway through^

After sanding the bottoms and the sides slightly they looked like this:

Then, in a shot with their POS card and its cooling solution:

I couldn't find anything in my room to attach them with other than rubber bands :

I slapped it back into my computer and tried OC'ing only to encounter results that I think were worse than without them. I figured the RAM wasn't level enough to have each sink cover 2 chips, and my rubber band bonding sucked, so I quietly ventured downstairs and found double sided tape, and cut the sinks in half and proceeded to sand them once again.

Then I stuck them on each chpi individiually, which makes them now look more like real ones (pictured with a stock intel CPU fan with a molex I soldered onto it that I use to cool the beast):

This yielded slightly better results: I could take the RAM higher without it overheating IMMEDIATELY. It gradually overheated :

So kind of a waste of time, but they look fairly cool. If I sanded them more they'd look really good but I don't really want to bother. They might actually work if I can get some thermal adhesive; I'm not gonna waste money buying any for this card.

You probably wonder why I don't use that Intel cooler in one of the pics for it; it won't fit because of the caps

Actually, the RAM does heat up. The GPU gets smokin hot without the fan (which I can't accomodate with my Linksys PCI card in).

Sorry, the card isn't mine, it's from a friend's Duron system.

EDIT: I just opened my case and felt them, and they're hot. Maybe i should put that fan back...

Likely yours don't get hot because mine is OC'd to 210 from 166.

while i have a similar card (tnt 2 pro), i did different modding. i took a skt370 hs from a celeron ~600, and left the fan on. it's 40x40, i think. i put as5 on the die (if that, more like a southbridge than a die), and zip tied the hs on. i got it on PRETTY tight. while the card has no fan connector, oh well. no ram sinks, but they don't get hot (big rectangle ram, gddr1?)
