Is the Zalman VF 900 compatible with the 4850 and will it cool the card better than a stock Visiontek reference cooler?

Yeah it's compatible.
See the Sapphire 4850 Toxic. It's a 4850 with a VF900

If you are willing to spend the extra money, get the VF1000.
__________________I might be selling my cards soon and I might end up parting out the cooler. I get about 30c idles and max of 40c with the VF1000. But either way, remember that the VRM's wont have coolers since it does not come with enough heatsinks. So you will either have to buy more, or hack up your stock cooler or just leave them empty.
