The problem with the 4870 is the VRM's and the majority of aftermarket coolers that do not address them properly. For the Accelero you have, you would have to buy or rig some VRM sinks for the 4870 so you don't melt it. This is a big reason I am still using the stock cooler, I have yet to see an aftermarket cooler which properly addresses the VRM temp problem.

Edit: Aside from http://www.overclock.net/hardware-ne...vrm-sinks.html Which look amazing.

The rev.2 accelero comes with HD48xx compatible VRM sinks - although they are just large ramsinks, with enough airflow over them they would be fine. You could always mod an old heatsink. Or one of these -

I like the looks of the T-RAD2 but as an early adopter I have a 4870 with TwinTurbo.

The TwinTurbo does a much better job than the stock cooler does at keeping the GPU at lovely temps. The TwinTurbo however does not address how hot the VRMs get. I promise playing Crysis for a length of time will melt your VRAM. I recorded a peak temp of 114C on the VRAM in a PC with excellent cooling conditions.

I have on order a set of iandh 4870 VRM sinks to address the problem. I can not imagine people who have left their VRMs bare with just a TwinTurbo on it.

The TwinTurbo is deadly silent at 35% fan speed while sufficiently providing adequate cooling for 2D/desktop use. I personally use 75% fan speed when gaming because it still maintains a 60C GPU temperature under full load and is still plenty silent.

I am constantly amazed at how quiet the fans runs for the amount of cooling it provides. I highly recommend it especially for the price.

40 bucks for the ram sink and another 40 something for the cooler? That is almost like 90 shipped for the cooler and ram sink.I can almost buy another video card for that price..

I got the T-Rad 2 from www.crazypc.com and man what a difference it made. I got the two 92mm smart fans option as well. My 4870 is both cool and quite.

You will need to cut the back half circle part of the stock (with the fan and shroud removed) plate off and use that part to cool the VRM's as the little heat sinks that come with it don't get the job done.

With the heat sinks the VRM's were going to 90c after using the stock plate the only go to 71c under full load. GPU only get to 50c-55c under full load with the T-Rad. Best of all it's quiet.

Use the thermal sensors for the smart fans and the fans will speed up as the temp rises. I put the first fan sensor on the GPU right beside the little square that interfaces with the head sink. The second fan sensor I put under the stock cut off head sink for the VRM's. I put that sensor right in the middle between the two sets for VRM's.

save yourself the jack....buy

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814129113

has dual fans, w/ the latest ccc you can up the fan speed from stock 25%. i upped to 60% and was running about 31c idle 43c load (cod4 maxed 1680x1050, 4xaa full af) and figured i'd take some strain off my fans and bumped it down to 50% no change in temps, so dropped it to 40% and now im at 31c idle and about 46-47c load. so i left it there.

no need for aftermarket cooler on that card...i also oc'd w/in ccc so 750mhz core up to 790mhz core and 1800mhz memory to 1900 mhz memory. temps didnt really raise much, 1c at idle 3c at load. so i bumped fan speed back up to 45%. and as already noted, vents out the backend...so no increased temps in the rig. i've read of cases where people running a 4850 experienced hot spots on the top of their case from having lack of cooling exhaust on the card.

in terms of fan noise...i cant really vouche for them on that...other than to say i cant hear any difference on it at 25% or 100%...but thats prolly bcuz i got 3 80mm fans, 2 120mm fans, a 92mm fan & a 130mm fan blowing in my rig...haha...fan noise is something i live w/...plus it means im more manly...
