Approximately one month ago, my GPU idled at near 60C and loaded sometimes at 110C. I've since disassembled my x1950PRO and replaced the thermal compound and removed the dust with canned air. Now I idle at ~38C and load at ~53C. Now, my problem does not lie with my temperatures, it lies with my RPM readings of the fan on my graphics card. It reads a speed that makes a race between a turtle and molasses look like a NHRA Championship run. My GPU fan reads a gust busting 82RPM. My CPU fan runs 30x faster than that. So, I was wondering, is there an issue with my graphics card? Is there an issue with my temperature monitor? Is this common? Can it be fixed? All input appreciated.

Did you plug the fan all the way back in after you installed it? Well, that's probably not the problem if your card's loading at 53c, but it's worth a shot (maybe just the RPM sense wire isn't fully seated). Have you tried manually setting the fan speed with a utility like ATI Tray Tools and seeing what that does?
Oh, and if you're using ATITool .26 or .27, I had a similar problem with my X1900XT - the fan speeds were essentially read backwards. A rather strange problem, and a dangerous one for someone like me with dynamic fan settings based on temperature. I got some pretty goofy fan RPM readings as well.
